40 years of 'Payer Awaaj Paoa Jai'


Soon after the play was staged, it generated huge interest among the audience because of its literary quality, theme, and excellent production. Within a year the play celebrated their golden jubilee, which happened to be the first of its kind in Bangladesh.

Two shows of the play was held on March 20, 1981 in Seoul, South Korea in the 5th Third World Theatre Festival, organised by the International Theatre Institute. Again, it was the first play from Bangladesh to be staged in a foreign country. Another meaningful staging of the play was held at the National Martyrs' Memorial, Savar, on March 25, 1987, and the 100th production of the play was held on March 23, 1990. The play was also telecast on Bangladesh Television, and aired on Bangladesh Betar, as a special drama on the occasion of the Independence Day.

Though the play was not performed for about ten years at one point of time, it is also a fact that no other play in Bangladesh has been running for forty years, till date. In the revival, Sudip Chakraborty directed and designed the production.

Presently, Ferdausi Majumdar, Keramat Mowla, Tofa Hossain, Tropa Majumdar, Maruf Kabir, Pareshj Acharjee, Samar Dev, Khurshid Alam, Nurul Islam Sunny, Rashedul Awal Shaon, Joardar Said, Tamanna Islam, Runa Laila, Tanvir Hossain Samdani, Kalyan Chowdhury, Tanjum Ara Palli, Kaowar Rajib, Atiqur Rahman, and Ershad Hasan will be performing performing in the play.

Moreover nearly eighty actors participated in the play over the years, among whom, Abdullah Al-Mamun, Mohammad Zakaria, Zahirul Haq, Abdul Quader, Tariq Anam Khan, Mita Chowdhury, Tarana Halim, Rekha Ahmed, Khairul Alam Sabuj, Ariful Hoq, Kazi Tamanna, Golam Rabbani, Jhuna Chowdhury, Tabibul Islam Babu, Afroza Basnu, Shireen Bakul, Shanta Islam, Taukir Ahmed, and Asif Munier are worth mentioning.

So far the play had 173 performances, and Fedausi Majumdar happens to be the only actor who performed in all the shows. Keramat Mowla, who was a performer on the opening night is now performing regularly.

The 174th performance of the play will be held on Friday, November 25, at 6:30 pm at the Neelima Ibrahim Auditorium of Mahila Samity.
