A human chain demanding legitimisation of illegal gas connections in Gazipur city corporation faced a baton charge from police on Thursday. At least 25 people, including journalists, have been reported to be injured in the confrontation.
The incident took place on Rajbari road in front of the Gazipur deputy commissioner’s (DC) office around noon.
A few hundred residents of Gazipur gathered there under the banner of Gazipur Metropolitan Development Committee to demand legitimising existing illegal gas connections and provision of legal gas lines.
The chief guest was the president of the committee and Gazipur Metropolitan Awami League General Secretary Jahangir Alam. Secretary General Waz Uddin Mia, Councilor Jobed Ali Jobe, and Azizur Rahman Shirish also spoke at the event.

The baton charge injured at least 25 people including media personnel from various networks – Mohiuddin Ripon (Jamuna TV), Debesh Mallik (NTV), Aktar Hossain (Doinik Khobor Bangladesh), Masud Rana (Doinik Nobochetona). The Jamuna TV representative’s phone and camera were smashed in the charge.
Gazipur Detective Branch OC Amir Hossain told the Dhaka Tribune: “The demonstration was illegal and disrupted highway traffic for hours. They [demonstrators] did not take any permission from the DC or the police for their demonstration.”
