Much-talked-about Superintendent of Police Babul Akter has been relieved from duty, reads a Home Ministry gazette notification.
According to the gazette
, signed by Deputy Secretary Mohammad Ilias Hossain and issued on Tuesday afternoon, Babul had been relieved in line with his resignation letter. Though it doesn't say when Babul submitted the letter.

Babul, who became popular through his anti-militant activities in Chittagong, earlier claimed that he had been forced to resign on June 24 under the circumstances that developed following the murder of his wife Mahmuda Khanam Mitu on June 5 – the day he was supposed to report to the Police Headquarters as a newly-promoted SP.
On June 24, SP Babul was picked up from his father-in-law’s house by the police, taken to the DB office for questioning in connection with Mitu murder and kept in custody for almost 15 hours – a move that created much hype.

The ministry received his resignation letter on August 9, an official confirmed to the Bangla Tribune on condition of anonymity.
Later, Babul went to Police Headquarters on August 3 – some 58 days after the murder – and met some high officials there. The following day he submitted to the ministry a letter seeking permission to join his duties.

On August 9, in another latter he prayed to the authorities for withdrawing the resignation letter.

Mitu was stabbed and shot dead in front of her son near GEC intersection of Chittagong around 6:30am. Three killers left the scene on a motorcyle. Their daughter was at home while Babul was staying in Dhaka at that time.

Police have arrested a number of suspects and remanded them in custody. But the alleged mastermind, police informant Abu Musa, has remained absconding.
At least 10 teams of the police’s PBI, CID, DB, RAB and the Counter-Terrorism and Transitional Crimes Unit are working on the case.
