Rampal Plant: BNP's movement depends on govt's response
The BNP has extended its support to the programmes of National Committee to Protect Oil, Gas, Mineral Resources, Power and Ports urging government to stop constructing Rampal Power Plant. The party also said whether it will announce any programme protesting the construction of Rampal power plant depends upon the behaviour of the government. “We are extending our support to their (National Committee to Protect Oil, Gas, Mineral Resources, Power and Ports) programmes,” Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, secretary general of the party, told journalists after placing floral wreaths at the party founder Ziaur Rahman's grave in the capital on Thursday. When asked, whether the party will announce any programme protesting the government's move to construct Rampal coal based power plant, Fakhrul said: “Whether we will oppose it taking to the street depends upon the government's behaviour. We have already placed our demand and will wait to know how they respond to our demand.” BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia on Wednesday urged the government to scrap the project as it will jeopardize the whole ecological balance of the world's largest mangrove forest Sundarbans. National Committee to Protect Oil, Gas, Mineral Resources, Power and Ports announces programmes of “Let’s Go Dhaka” on November 24 and grand rally in Dhaka on November 26 urging the government to backtrack from its move to set up coal based power plant in Rampal. When asked that the ruling party leaders claimed that the BNP is opposing the Rampal project as the party is alienated from the people and wants to remain live in politics using this issue, Fakhrul said: “Awami League is trying to divert the issue. BNP and Khaleda Zia is always in favour of country's interests.” The BNP leader said: “BNP chairperson categorically said that more power plants should be set up in the country but it should not be done destroying Sundarbans. There are many alternative places but we do not have any alternative to Sundarbans. We think people of the country agree that the government should shift the power plant from Rampal.”
