The Supreme Court has stayed the bail granted by the High Court for AHM Kibria, a life-term jail convict in Bishwajit Das murder case.
A five-member Appellate Division bench headed by Chief Justice SK Sinha passed the order yesterday in response to a prosecution petition.
The High Court granted the bail to Kibria on February 3.
Later, the prosecution filed a plea with the chamber judge seeking a stay order. The chamber judge stayed the order and forwarded it to the regular bench for hearing. The Appellate Division kept the chamber judge’s stay order active.
On December 18, 2013, Dhaka’s Speedy Trial Tribunal 4 sentenced eight persons to death and 13 others to life-term imprisonment for killing Bishwajit, a tailor, near Bahadur Shah Park of Old Dhaka on December 9, 2012.
All the convicts were students of Jagannath University and activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League, the ruling Awami League’s student body. Thirteen among them are still at large.
