Top 5 Indian indie flicks 2015

Update : 05 Jan 2016, 06:25 PM

Here’s a list of 2015’s five best indie films in the Indian film industry that have moved past all the singing, dancing and the Bollywood melodrama.

RangiTaranga

RangiTaranga is a romantic thriller. The movie revolves around three main characters Gautham, Indu and Sandhya. Gautham(Nirup Bhandari) is a novelist, who leads an isolated life somewhere in Ooty.

The main attraction of RangiTaranga is its amazing cinematography. For the first time a Kannada movie has brought Hollywood cinematographer Lance Kalpan to the movie. The song Akka Pakka, penned and sung by director Anup Bhandari, adds to his independent effort for the success of the film.

Thani Oruvan

Thani Oruvan is a psychological thriller. The movie deals with a basic concept of good versus evil which has been narrated in a unique style.

Thani Oruvan is a technically strong film, with intriguing screenplay backed by engaging background score that forms a lethal combination. Ramji’s cinematography adds stability and also enhances the overall feel of the film. Colours too have been used brilliantly as the team has managed to give us a feeling that they sure know where to draw the line in order to make the pictures look sleek and truly international.

Uppi 2

Uppi 2, the sequel to the earlier movie Upendra (1999), is a thriller. Uppi 2 is a story about Naanu and Neenu. Both the roles have been played by Upendra himself.  Focusing on the theme of “Live for Today,” Upendra seems to have re-achieved what he is best at.

Upendra’s mix of action and emotion and everyday wisdom keeps the audience engaged, but unlike life that offers no answers sometimes, he leaves the audience with the option of revisiting the film to draw their own conclusions and probably find the clues to live better.

Cinematographer Ashok Kashyap has literally followed Upendra’s directorial thinking while Gurukiran’s music and background score well.

Chhello divas

Chhello divas is a comedy based on the college life of eight friends. How these characters bunk classes, give exams, irritate faculties and fall in love are all narrated in the film. The director of the film has pretty much covered every shade of college lives. With a common story, Chhello Divas will take you back to that golden period of your life.

In addition to good direction, the best thing about Chhello Divas is its dialogues and script delivery. Aarjav Trivedi aka Dholu takes all the credit for it.

Drishyam

Drishyam is a thriller drama film directed by Nishikant Kamat and produced by Kumar Mangat Pathak, Ajit Andhare and Abhishek Pathak. It features Ajay Devgan, Shriya Saran and Tabu in the leading roles, The film is a remake of the Malayalam film of the same name, directed by Jeethu Joseph with Mohanlal and Meena in the lead. The movie depicts how the Salgaonkar family, as the prime suspect for a teenage boy gone missing, weathers the storm that ensues during the violent investigation.

Vishal Bhardwaj manages to deliver a handful of soothing (if not exceptional or memorable) tracks that go with the flow of the film and do not seem thrusted. It is the film’s background music (Sameer Phaterpekar) that acts as a major driving force in the narrative of the film.
