How to be popular in school?

Update : 21 Sep 2015, 12:37 PM

If you are a very popular person in school, life would be a breeze, wouldn’t it? But if you are not the centre of the universe, we are here to help you out, So how do you become popular in school, and more importantly, how do you keep it that way?

Firstly, be honest. Do not try to be someone you are not. If you see your friend mesmerising the class with their guitar skills, do not try and imitate him/her. Sure you can be inspired by your mate, but do not try to be like them. Try and find your own passion. Love writing? Share some of your finest pieces with your friends and let your teachers read them. If you try to be good at everything, you will end up losing your own unique personality. Whatever you do, try and excel at it. Your honesty will bring you popularity.

If you are one of those students who are only good at studies, well that is exactly how you are supposed to be in school. Try and continue being an excellent student. Submit your assignments on time, do well in your class tests and exams, and help your peers. If somebody comes up to you and asks for assistance, do not play the “I honestly don’t know” card. That is very impolite and uncool. If you are good at a particular topic, say ionic bonding, why not invite your friends over and hold a group study session? A friend in need, is a popular friend indeed.

Books and copies might not be everyone’s cup of tea. Do you find yourself glued to the screens during those intense matches of the football Premier League? Do you eat, breathe and live sports? Then you can board the popularity train as well. Show your amazing skills of football, or gift a rain of sixes during the games period. Being good at sports will surely earn you respect and your face will be the most recognised one in your class. But refrain from showing off, that will bring you popularity on the negative scale. Arrange a sports day in cooperation with your school authority. If you have any sports club in your school, try and be an active member, and maybe even run for being the president.

If you are crazy about music and you can safely call yourself a singer, why not let this interest be your stairway to heaven? (Led Zeppelin all the way!). If you find yourself comfortable with classical Bengali songs such as Rabindra Sangeet or Nazrul Geeti, then practice regularly, talk to your music instructors and you could be selected to sing at your school’s cultural programmes. Keep at it and your school can even send you to national level musical competitions as well. You could be your school’s Ed Sheeran or Taylor Swift. Dreaming already aren’t you?

No matter what people say, always remember that if you are good at something, never do it for free. Rephrasing it again, if you are really good at something you love, never stop being good at it. If you love doing something and that is not what most people do, do not stop there. Everyone is unique and special in their own way. If you think you can make the entire class, along with the teacher, laugh until they cry, why don’t you try to be your class comedian? Try and bring a light sense of humour and comedy in everything. Don’t go overboard, or you might be standing out of your classroom giggling with the wall. Be moderate. Who knows, maybe one day you can be a stand-up comedian.

Flaunt your collection of books if you’re an avid reader, or games if you’re a gamer. Girls, if you have a good sense of fashion, share it with your friends. But don’t rub it on their faces though. No one likes a diva. Everyone should know you as a fashionista with all the latest, trendy fashion accessories. You would always be surrounded by your class mates asking what the current buzz is.

If you don’t find your thing in any of the stated above, don’t give up. Don’t lose your confidence. There is nothing worse than giving up and being the loner in your class. As we have mentioned earlier, the most important way to make friends and be your class hero, is to be yourself. Do what you are good at. Helping your teacher carry the copies to her room, or making sure no one litters your class room are just a few overboard methods that will make fall under the uncool radar. If you are one of those students who does not understand the necessity of this article, then my friend, you probably are one of the most popular kids in school. Keep doing what you are doing. Never misbehave with your peers or teachers. Taking advantage of your popularity is not cool at all. There is a fine line between being popular and being a pompous bully.

Remember not to copy someone else, as Steve Jobs once said, “Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life.”
