The Supreme Court has extended the bail period for six weeks to BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir in three arson and vandalism cases.

The BNP leader who is presently undergoing treatment in the United States will have to surrender before a lower court after the bail period expires. A four-member bench of the Appellate Division headed by Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha gave the extension order yesterday in reply to a petition of Fakhrul seeking an eight-week bail extension.

On July 13, the same bench granted a six-week bail to the BNP senior leader. The first bail appeared on treatment grounds upon the report by Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University on the BNP leader’s health condition.
