Associate Professor Nigar Sultana of Department of Marketing of Jahangirnagar University (JU) has been alleged for harassing students by abusing her administrative power.
A total of 33 master’s students out of 47 students of the 40th batch demanded that Nigar, who is also the house tutor of Sheikh Hasina Hall, be restricted from using any of her authoritative power over the batch.
They submitted three written complaints to the JU vice-chancellor, dean of the Faculty of Business and chairman of the department in this connection yesterday.
They alleged that instead of conducting academic discussions, Nigar Sultana embarrasses the students by bringing up their personal issues in the classroom and threatens of failing them if any one protests. She also threatens of giving less marks to the students whom she does not like.
A student of the department, seeking anonymity, told the Dhaka Tribune: “The teacher has been harassing the students both mentally and academically for long. So far, we did not protest fearing that she might hamper our academic life and also honouring her as a teacher. But now we made the official complaint finding no other way.”
The students threatened to restrain form all kinds of academic activities if their demand was not met.
Nigar Sultana said as the house tutor of a female dorm, she usually deals with a number of issues of the students. The students might had misunderstood her and took things personally.
“I have not taken any class of the 40th batch in the last one-and-a-half-years and I do not understand why these students brought such allegations against me,” she claimed.
The students claimed to JU VC Prof Farzana Islam that Nigar Sultana is biased in dealing with students and behaves in an uncouth manner during viva exams.
Dean of the Faculty of Business Prof Amir Hossain said he had asked the chairman of the department to address the problem.
