Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has handed over the Bangladesh Liberation War Honour to Bharat Ratna Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s family members.

A statement from the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) said this on Thursday, reports NDTV.

“Prime Minister Narendra Modi today [Thursday] handed over the Bangladesh Liberation War Honour to the family members of former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee – Ranjan Bhattacharya, Namita Bhattacharya, and Niharika Bhattacharya," reads the statement.

External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj was also present on the occasion.

Modi had received the honour on Vajpayee's behalf from President Abdul Hamid during his recent visit to Bangladesh.

“It was a matter of pride for the people of India that Vajpayee was being honoured for his contribution to the 1971 Liberation War,” Modi said while receiving the award.

Vajpayee as the Foreign Minister and Prime Minister had given great emphasis on strong ties with Dhaka and visited Bangladesh in 1999.
