Rain plays foul in top-flight football

Both the scheduled matches of the Manyavar Bangladesh Premier League at Bangabandhu National Stadium yesterday were abandoned due to unfavorable weather and unplayable conditions.

The first match of the day between Mohammedan and Rahmatganj duly kicked off at 4:15pm but referee Abdul Hannan Miron was forced to stop the match due to the heavy downpour that started at 4:22pm.

Following more than an hour’s wait, the referee called off the match as the field became too soft and both the flanks became water-logged due to the poor drainage system.

Match commissioner Rafikul Alam explained the scenario. “It is not possible to keep the balance in the pitch and the rain has not stopped. There were also fears of lightning and thunder. So, the matches are abandoned and as per the by-laws it will be shifted to another date,” said Rafikul.

The second match of the day between Brothers Union and Feni Soccer Club at 6:15pm was also called off.
