The students of Jahangirnagar University yesterday blockaded the Vice Chancellor’s office demanding immediate punishment of those who sexually assaulted an indigenous female student on the night of Pohela Boishakh (April 14).
Sources said the agitating students organised the blockade around 11am under the banner of “Nipironer Biruddhe Jahangirnagar” while JU VC Prof Farzana Islam and other administrative personnel were cordoned off at their office.
The students however withdrew the blockade after VC Farzana Islam met them around 12pm and assured of finishing the probe on the upcoming syndicate meeting of the university on May 23.
JU VC said the authorities were working on the matter and necessary action would be taken following the probe report.
On Tuesday night, the students under the same banner brought out a torch procession demanding the punishment of the assaulters, sources said.
Some five JU unit Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) leaders and activists sexually assaulted a botany department female indigenous student and snatched her money and valuables.
The authorities have already suspended the five accused BCL leaders and activists while JU unit BCL also expelled the accused temporarily.
