Happy Birthday, Dopiaza!

May 7 marked the 102nd birth anniversary of Kazi Abdul Kashem, popularly known as “Dopiaza,” who was considered the first Muslim cartoonist in the Indian Subcontinent. Born in Jhenidah, before moving to Kolkata, Kashem was a man of many talents, known not just for his cartoons, but also his work in music and early animation. Dopiaza’s artwork graced many publications between 1937-1980, and he often used his artwork to influence political movements.

Kazi Abdul Kashem passed away on August 7, 2003.
