A Dhaka court yesterday granted two more months of time to the CID for completing its further investigation into the death of Maj Gen Abul Manzoor.

Judge SM Saiful Islam of the First Additional District and Sessions Judge’s Court passed the order following a time petition filed by Abdul Kahar Akhand, the investigation officer of the case.

On February 27 last year, the same court had ordered for further investigation into the death of Manzoor.

The court yesterday asked the CID to submit its reinvestigation report by May 14. With this extension, the court extended the CID’s report submission deadline for the sixth time.

In his time petition, Akand, also a special superintendent of Criminal Investigation Department, mentioned that he visited the USA in June 2014 and recorded the statement of Manzoor’s daughter Lubna Manzoor; but failed to record the statement of Manzoor’s wife as she was ill at the time.

Later, the wife’s counsel told Akhand that he would inform the CID after her recovery; but the lawyer has not yet communicated with Akand.

Manzoor, commander of sector 8 during the Liberation War, was killed at Chittagong Cantonment on June 1, 1981, just two days after the killing of President Ziaur Rahman.

Jatiya Party Chairman HM Ershad, the prime accused in the case, was not present in the court as he was earlier exempted from personal appearance before the trial court. His lawyer Sheikh  Sirajul Islam represented him yesterday.

The other two accused Maj (retd) Kazi Emdadul Haque and Lt Col (retd) Mostafa Kamaluddin Bhuiyan were present in the court.
