Several hundred pro-Awami League university teachers, students, officers, and employees of Jahangirnagar University (JU) yesterday formed a human chain at the university’s main entrance at 11:30 am, under the banner of “JU Awami Family,” protesting the nationwide general strike and ongoing blockade called by the BNP-led 20 party alliance.
JU Social Science Faculty Dean Professor Amir Hossain, JU Teachers’ Association (JUTA) President Professor Dr Khabir Uddin, former JUTA President Professor Dr Ajit Kumar Mazumder, International Relations department Associate Professor Abdullah Hel Kafi, JU Deputy Registrar [Education] Mohammad Ali, Deputy Registrar [Higher Education] Abul Kalam Azad, JU unit Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) President Mahmudur Rahman Jony, and General Secretary Rajib Ahmed Rasel were present, said the source.
Participants demanded restraining petrol bomb throwers, and properly punishing those who sponsor the violence. They also stated that throwing petrol and cocktail bombs would not benefit the public; rather, innocent people would continue to be killed, and the nation’s valuable wealth damaged, the source added.
After the human chain, the participants held a short demonstration in the same location.
On Sunday night, unidentified pickets had exploded two crude bombs in front of AFM Kamaluddin Hall around 1:15am. Two crude bombs were also found at the university proctor’s office on Sunday night around 8.30pm, said the source. Following these, the decision was made to hold the human chain.
