Dhaka Central Jail, now located at Lalbagh in the capital, would be shifted to Keraniganj by June this year as the construction work of the new central jail has already been completed.
“After shifting of the old central jail, a park and two museums will be set up on the nine-acre area,” said M Maniruzzaman, deputy assistant engineer of Dhaka Public Works Division.
He said six out of eight buildings of the new central jail have already been completed and the remaining work will end within the scheduled time.
Deputy Divisional Engineer of PWD Swanedra Shekhor Mondol said the estimated cost of the new central jail has been fixed at Tk406 crore, while the earlier estimated cost was Taka 337.08. The central jail is being built on 194.41 acres of land.
In the newly constructed modern jail, 4,000 barracks are being constructed for male prisoners, 100 for male adolescent prisoners, 30 for male mentally challenged prisoners, 200 for woman prisoners, 40 for female adolescent prisoners, 20 for female mentally challenged prisoners, while 60 classified wards and 400 cells are being constructed for dangerous prisoners, said Shekhor Mondol.
A 20-bed capacity hospital, a modern hospital with 200-bed capacity and a day care centre will also be set up at the new central jail.
On December 23, 2014, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina announced the shifting of the old central jail to Keraniganj while she was inaugurating the Jail Week on the Kashimpur Jail Campus.
