A man was killed and two others sustained severe burn injuries in an air conditioner blast at a hotel in the capital’s Gulshan area yesterday.
The deceased is Anwar Hossain, 35, a technician of the Wattson Group. The injured are the group’s assistant manager (service) Sohel Rana, 30, and Kartik, 40 a staff member of the hotel.
The blast took place around 3:00pm when Anwar and Sohel were engaged in repairing the air conditioner on the 16th floor of “Six Seasons” Hotel in the Gulshan-2 area, killing Anwar on the spot, said Rafiqul Islam, officer-in-charge of Gulshan Police Station.
At the time of the incident, Kartik was standing beside them to supervise the work, he said.
With 62% and 45% burn injuries respectively, Sohel and Kartik were undergoing treatment at the burn and plastic surgery unit of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH).
Partha Sankar Paul, a residential surgeon at the burn unit of DMCH said that Sohel’s condition was critical.
“We have kept both Kartik and Sohel under observation. We are doing our best and hope they recover soon,” he said.
Authorities of the hotel could not be contacted for their comments.
A person, who refused to reveal his identity, at the hotel’s inquiry desk said no other harm was caused to the hotel.
