Four people, including a transgender, were killed in separate road accidents in different areas of the capital yesterday.
In Banani, a transgender named Maria, 22, was critically injured when a bus hit her in front of Banani graveyard while she was crossing the road.
She was admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital by another transgender named Forhad where the duty doctor declared Maria dead around 6:45pm, says Mozammel Haque, inspector of DMCH police outpost.
Forhad, who knew Maria from before, said Maria’s real name was Mahbub. His father’s name was Dudu Mia and their native village was in Jafornagara area of Kishoreganj. Maria used to live with the transgender community in the capital’s Niketon area of Gulshan.
In Uttara, two people were left spot dead and one critically injured when a speedy private car hit them from behind in front of Scholastica near Jasimuddin Road of Uttara around 4:45pm. The dead were Md Harun, 48, a day-labourer, and Moktar, 18, an assistant of a pick-up van driver.
The injured was Jakir Hossain, 35, the driver of the pick-up van. He was undergoing treatment at the Intensive Care Unit of National Medical in the capital’s Uttara.
Describing the incident, Mohammad Yousuf Ali, sub-inspector of Airport police station, said: “The pick-up van had caught a leak in the tyre while it was on its way to deliver a printing press machine in Uttara. Jalal and Moktar had parked the van in front of Scholastica school and were working to repair the leak while Harun was watching it standing beside them. During that time, a speedy car hit them from behind, leaving Moktar and Harun spot dead.”
“We were able to seize the private car but the driver managed to escape. A general diary was filed with the police station in this regard,” added SI Yousuf.
In Khilkhet, a young man named Saiful Islam, 22, was killed after he was struck by a vehicle with the registration number Dhaka Metro Ba-11-0401. Saiful was crossing the road at Kuril highway rail gate area around 3pm. Later, locals rushed him to Kurmitola General Hospital where the doctors declared him dead, Mohammad Ekramul, SI of Khilkhet said.
The SI said Saiful hailed from Pirojpur area and was son of Md Tareq. “His body has been sent to DMC morgue for autopsy and we are in search of the killer vehicle, SI Ekramul added.
