Workers of Hamim Sportswear Ltd under the banner of the National Garments Workers’ Federation yesterday called for reopening and paying its workers all due salaries and overtime-bills immediately.
They made the call staging demonstrations and forming a human chain in front of the National Press Club in the capital. Around 150 workers took part in the demonstrations.
The factory has been closed since October 13 without serving any legal notice and showing any reason behind it, leaving around 400 workers unemployed. The protesters urged the authorities to prevent workplace harassment and ensure justice on such cases and job security.
The factory owner had allegedly rejected the workers’ demand to register under a trade union as one of its workers Alamgir told the Dhaka Tribune: “Our demand for registering under a trade union has been rejected three times by the authorities.”
Another worker called Runa said two female workers – Morjina and Shakil – were physically harassed and injured by the higher authorities after they had demanded their outstanding overtime bills. The factory was closed the next day – October 13.
