Fifty-three member states are set to decide today whether Jatiya Sangsad Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury would be first Bangladeshi to become the chairperson of the executive committee of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association.

The general assembly of the ongoing 60th CPA conference in Yaoundé, the capital of Cameroon, will hold a vote to elect either Shirin Sharmin or Cayman Islands Speaker Julianna O’Connor-Connolly as the president of the 35-member executive committee.

Voters from 75 legislatures will vote to elect the chairperson for a three-year term. CPA members including Australia, the UK, Canada, New Zealand, India, Sri Lanka, Singapore and the Maldives have already extended support to the Bangladesh speaker, who is now in Cameroon to attend the 11-day conference.
