Zia draw away from title

Grandmaster Ziaur Rahman continued to dominate in the Berger Paints National ‘A’ Chess beating Uten in the 12th round at Bangladesh Olympic Association (BOA) media centre yesterday.

Playing with white pieces, Zia chose Catalan Opening and won the game in the 60th move. Zia now has 10.5 points after the end of penultimate round. A draw against GM Enamul Hossain today in the final round will be enough for Zia to lift the title.

GM Niaz Murshed defeated Fide Master Debaraj Chatterjee to remain in the 2nd position with 9.5 points. Niaz played with black pieces and won after 49 moves. GM Enamul Hossain was placed 3rd with nine points after being held to a draw with reigning champion GM Abdullah Al Rakib.

In the other games of the round, International Master Minhazuddin Ahmed beat FM Rezaul Haque, FM Sk Nasir Ahmed beat CM Sohel Chopwdhury, Masum Hossain drew with Golam Mostafa Bhuiyan, FM Kh Aminul Islam beat CM Mahtabuddin Ahmed.
