Bangladesh top-flight club Sheikh Russel KC will take on seven-time Mongolian league champions Erchim FC today in their opening match of the AFC President’s Cup at the Sugathadasa Stadium in Colombo.
Nothing but a victory will suffice for the Bangladesh Premier League side as they have to win both the Group B matches to progress to the final. Russel will play their last group game against Rimyongsu Club of North Korea on September 24. Russel, who became the first Bangladeshi outfit to qualify for the final round of the AFC President’s Cup, underwent an hour-long training session yesterday.
Zahid Hasan Emily believed it is very much possible to beat the Mongolian club and said they are not looking beyond the opening game. “Our main target is the first match then we will think about the second game. We want to win tomorrow’s (today’s) match and it is quite possible for us to beat them.
“They are a good team and are the domestic champions in the last seven years. They also have two quality Serbian players (Zoran Pesic and Milan Sredojevic),” said the national striker yesterday.
Skipper Mithun Chowdhury is also targeting a win against the Mongolian champions. “Tomorrow (today) is our main match because they are a strong team. So we will go onto the pitch with only one target - to win the match.”
