Liberation War Affairs Minister AKM Mozammel Haque yesterday told the parliament that the government would take necessary measures to cancel freedom fighter certificates of five secretaries on the recommendations of the Anti-Corruption Commission.
“We got the ACC letter on Wednesday. We will take necessary steps to cancel the freedom fighter certificates of the five secretaries after reviewing its recommendations,” he said in reply to a question from Jatiya Party MP Peer Fazlur Rahman.
With Deputy Speaker Fazle Rabbi Mia in the chair, the minister was replying to different questions from lawmakers during the question-answer session.
Mozammel said: “Our ministry has no jurisdiction to take any action against the secretaries apart from cancelling their certificates if they are found guilty. The Public Administration Ministry will take action against them.”
The ACC found that five secretaries took freedom fighter certificates by providing false documents and recommended taking action against them.
In response to a question from ruling party lawmaker Amatul Kibria Keya Chowdhury whether the ministry would take any action against those, including AK Khandaker, for distorting the history of liberation war, the minister said his ministry had no jurisdiction to take action in this regard.
“The ministry has nothing to do against AK Khandaker. The court can take action against him if anybody goes to it,” he said.
In reply to another question from AL lawmaker Selina Begum, he said his ministry had cancelled the certificates of 182 fake freedom fighters and criminal cases were filed against them on the basis of the report of National Security Intelligence.
He also told the parliament that now there were a total of 187,596 freedom fighters in the country.
In reply to a scripted question, the minister said the process of identifying fake freedom fighters was going on. “Those who will be found fake freedom fighters will be excluded from the list of freedom fighters.”
While replying to a supplementary question from Selina Begum, he said more than 45,000 people were
enlisted as freedom fighters during the rule of the BNP-Jamaat alliance government.
“It seems that most of them are fake. That is why we will prepare a new list of freedom fighters, dropping the names of fake freedom fighters from the list,” he added.
