Bangladeshis killed in UAE identified

Update : 30 Aug 2014, 08:49 PM

The identities of two Bangladeshi workers killed in United Arab Emirates have been confirmed, said AKM Mizanur Rahman, first secretary (labour) at Bangladesh Consulate in Dubai.

The deceased were identified as Md Jasim Uddin, 40, the son of Abdur Razzak Bepary from Mehendiganj upazila in Barisal, and Palash, 49, the son of Tamijuddin from Lohajang upazila in Munshiganj.

Mizanur said their bodies have been kept in a mortuary at Sharjah police headquarter. It would take around a week to send the bodies to Bangladesh, Mizanur told the Dhaka Tribune over phone from UAE yesterday.

He also said as the workers were working in that country illegally, they would not be compensated.

According to a report by the Gulf News on Thursday, the workers died after falling from a building under construction beside the King Faisal Road of Sharjah on Wednesday.

Khaleej Times, however, reported that the two workers died on the spot after a makeshift lift on the construction site crashed to the ground from ninth floor when the cables supporting it snapped on Wednesday.
