Agitating Tuba group workers, beside setting an ultimatum to meet their demands, have called a general strike in industrial areas across the country from Saturday.

Tuba Group Sramik Sangram Committee Convenor Moshrefa Mishu made the announcements from a fifth floor window of Tuba factory at Badda area in the capital on Wednesday evening.

Mishu alleged police barred them from holding a press conference scheduled to begin at 5pm.

She also announced protest rally throughout the country for Thursday and Friday.

"We will continue our huger strike and observe a general strike in industrial areas if our five-charter demands are not met within Thursday,"she said.

While talking with journalists about not allowing journalists into the factory, the ADC Mahbubur Rahaman of Gulshan Division of Dhaka Metropolitan police said they have put the restriction to avert any untoward situation in the factory.

Agitating Tuba workers' five demands are: immediate payment of unpaid wages, overtime and Eid bonuses, factories be kept open, compensation for workers who have fallen ill during their work, cancellation of Tuba Group Managing Director Delwar Hossain’s bail and compensation for the victims of the Tazreen factory fire.

At least 1,200 workers from five factories under the Tuba Group have been on a hunger strike for tenth consecutive day at Hossain Market in the capital’s Badda area, demanding the payment of three months’ wages, overtime and Eid bonuses.
