The High Court yesterday granted bail to Mufti Muhammad Wakkas, a Hefazat-e Islam Nayeb-e-Ameer, for six months in five cases, including three related to the killing of policemen and violence in Motijheel and Paltan areas on May 5 last year.
The government will appeal against the bail, Deputy Attorney General Khandaker Diliruzzaman said.
The bench of Justice Naima Haider and Justice Zafar Ahmed rejected his bail petition in another case, while the file of that other case has gone missing. BNP Chairperson’s Adviser Khandker Mahbub Hossain represented Mufti Wakkas.
The Detective Branch of Police arrested the Hefazat leader at the capital’s Malibagh on September 2 last year.
He is also the secretary general of Jamiatul Ulema-e-Islam, a member of the BNP-led 19-party alliance. He was a state minister during the rule of military ruler HM Ershad.
