The government is going to raise the status of six NBR members to secretary level from the current additional secretary.
Official sources said the public administration ministry will soon issue an official order in this regard.
Earlier, BCS Taxation Association, BCS Vat Implementation and Income Tax Association and a NBR member made a proposal to elevate the revenue board members’ status to secretary level.
The proposal got finance ministry approval and was sent to the public administration ministry for taking steps.
Finance Minister AMA Muhith said he talked about the issue to the PM Adviser on Public Administration HT Imam. Prime Minister was present during the talk, he added.
The proposal also included raising the status of tax commissioners.
The proposal argued: “The growth in revenue earning on average was 14% over the past five years until last fiscal when the growth increased to 20%.”
“Besides, tax-GDP ratio now stands at 10.7% as a result of the increased revenue earning,” it added.
It said works of NBR officials have also increased with the rise in money laundering cases.
According to the sources, the present rules are depriving the senior tax officials who are involved in the collection of 85% of the country’s total revenue.
Such deprivation is causing resentment to the tax cadre officials at three wings of NBR, the sources added.
The tax officials argued that their posts were not upgraded to grade-1 while the government elevated the status of 25 posts of other departments recently.
Senior tax officials continue to remain in grade 2 status.
The post of NBR members is equivalent to additional secretary although the member post is the highest in rank in the country’s revenue authority.
The NBR has 868 income tax and 587 customs and VAT cadre officials.
