The sweet aroma of Aman paddy suffused the air of villages and farmers are getting ready to reap the early varieties of Aman at Jhinaigati in Sherpur.
Farmers also expecting a bumper production and a good price in the market in this season.
Earlier in the season when the paddy was growing farmers had feared that they might lose their crop because of insufficient rainfall, but at the end of the season they observed that dense fog and enough irrigation water helped them to hope for a bumper production.
Sarowardi Dudu Mondol, a farmer from Shalchura village, said he was hoping to have a bumper yield this season.
Dudu Mondol also added that the production even could exceed their target.
Farmers of the upazila have also expressed their satisfaction as price of a maund of paddy has been set around Tk800-900 in the market.
However, owners of the verdant paddy fields, who are still waiting to harvest their paddy, are praying for getting also a good price.
Farmer Abdur Rahman said: “If the current market rate for paddy persists, we would be able to escape financial losses.”
Rahman added that people could not even imagine how a farmer feel after failing to get a good price after all his affords to grow the paddy.
“We don’t have any other option but to expect fair price because we are made to purchase fertilizers, pesticides and other required inputs at a high rate,” he added. Korban Ali, Jhinaigati upazila agriculture officer, said the target for Aman production has been set at 15,100 hectares of land at the upazila in this season. But the yield has successfully exceeded the target.
