Blasts throughout capital

Blasts and acts of arson were reported in several areas of the capital ahead of Sunday, the day a 60-hour nationwide strike begins if the government fails to engage in talks on the caretaker issue with BNP .

The blasts, which have occurred amidst an on-going ban on rallies in the capital, created panic among people in the affected areas.

Three blasts occurred near the Kakrail residence of Appellate Division Judge SK Sinha.

Ramna division police Deputy Commissioner Sheikh Maruf Hassan said police will file a case if the judge or someone on his behalf does not.

Ramna police also said two more blasts took place near the residence of Justice Zinat Ara.

Dhanmondi police said two handmade bombs exploded near the Dhanmondi residence of Environment Minister Hasan Mahmud.

A bus was set on fire near Tejgaon college in the Farmgate area around 12:30pm, the fire service and civil defence control room said.

Activists of Jamaat-e-Islami locked horns with law enforcers in the Bijoynagar area in the afternoon. At least eight vehicles were vandalised and around 10 handmade bombs were blasted at scene.

Paltan police station Sub Inspector Fouzia Khan said eight people were held at the scene of the blasts but she could not provide their identities.

Motijheel division Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Ashrafuzzaman said two handmade bombs exploded near his office in Motijheel.

Islami Chhatra Shibir brought out a procession and blasted five handmade bombs near Lab Aid Hospital on Mirpur Road around 10:30am, Dhaka Tribune photographer Mahmud Hossain Opu said.

Dhanmondi Police Station Officer-In-Charge Masud Karim confirmed the information and added that no one could be apprehended from the spot.

Two more handmade bombs were blasted near the Dhanmondi residence of Jubo League Chairman Omar Faruque Chowdhury.

Six handmade bombs were blasted near Kakrail police station in the morning. Paltan police station OC Golam Sarwar said six people were detained in connection with the blasts.

Tejgaon division police DC Biplab Sarker said three explosions took place in the Mohammadpur area.

On Friday, BNP Chairperson and opposition chief Khaleda Zia warned of a 60-hour hartal from Sunday if the government fails to engage in dialogue on the caretaker government issue.

However, Awami League called upon the opposition to refrain from violence and participate in the elections which will be held in line with the constitution.
