If situation demands, EC to sit with political parties: CEC

Update : 22 Sep 2013, 07:51 PM

Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad said on Sunday that the Election Commission would take decision whether it sit with political parties or not considering the overall situation.

The chief election commissioner said during the preparation of electoral code of conduct the commission would follow other democratic countries where elections held without dissolving parliament.

“Considering the situation, the commission will decide whether it sit with the political parties or not. We had sat with the political parties earlier,” the CEC said while talking to reporters after a law and order meeting on Barguna-2 by-election at the Commission secretariat.

“We have time in our hand and will prepare the electoral code of conduct before announcing the poll schedule. We will prepare the electoral code of conduct ensuring level playing field for all parties and candidates,” he added.

About the progress of Bangladesh Nationalist Front’s (BNF) registration, Kazi Rakibuddin said the commission was scrutinising it’s application.

The BNF earlier alleged that EC field level officials did not submit correct reports about it.

About the allegation, he said the commission had formed three-member committee led by Additional Deputy Commissioner to reinvestigate the matter.

The commission would deploy 22-member of law enforcers at general centre and 2- member of law enforcers at risky centres during Barguna-2 by-polls, the CEC said. The EC will also deploy members of coast guard, he added, hoping that the election would be held in free and fair manner.
