Hartal supporters locked horns with law enforcers in Rajshahi city’s Shalbagan area early Wednesday, during the 48-hour shutdown called by Jamaat-e-Islami.
Police detained a person in connection to the incident.
Meanwhile, pro-shutdown activists torched a truck in Kharkhari bypass area.
The shutdown was called after International Crimes Tribunal awarded death sentence to Jamaat’s Assistant Secretary General Abdul Quader Molla on Tuesday.
Some 25 Islami Chhatra Shibir activists, the student affiliate of Jamaat, brought out a procession at Shalbagan area near Rajshahi University campus around 6:30am.
Boalia model police station Officer-in-charge Ziaur Rahman Zia told Dhaka Tribune that police fired rubber bullets to disperse the crowd.
“We caught one from scene,” Ziaur said.
Witnesses said strike supporters fought pitched battles with police.
Boalia police station Sub Inspector Taslima said that the arrestee has been kept in police custody.
Rajshahi Metropolitan Police control room sources said hartal supporters torched a truck in Kharkhari bypass area around 5:30am in the morning.
Witnesses said a few handmade bombs were also exploded during the incident.
