A group of at least 20 armed Jamaat-e-Islami and Islami Chhatra Shibir "cadres" reportedly opened fire on a police patrolling team while they were on hartal duty at Satkania upazila in Chittagong on Wednesday.
Two policemen received bullet injuries during the attack.
Witnesses said law enforcers locked into a chase and counter chase with the hartal supporters when they tried to put a blockade on the Chittagong-Cox’s Bazar Highway.
At a stage, Jamaat-Shibir activist brush fired at the police from Jorpukur police outpost when they tried to disperse the crowd.
Sources said Constable Iqbal received bullet wounds in the chest while the identity of the other policeman could not be known immediately.
Earlier, Additional Superintendent of Police (South Chittagong Zone) Mohammad Iltutmish said Iqbal was shot in the leg during the incident.
ASP Iltutmish said: “Iqbal has been rushed to Chittagong Medical College Hospital.”
Meanwhile, Chittagong Superintendent of Police, Hafiz Akhter visited Iqbal at the hospital.
Hafiz Akhter said: “Iqbal was shot with a pistol or similar weapon and the bullet passed through his chest.”
Later, Iqbal was shifted from CMCH to National Institute of Diseases of the Chest and Hospital (NIDCH) in Dhaka around 7:30pm for better treatment.
