The Election Commission is set to increase security measures at polling booths, for ensuring secret ballot-casting in the upcoming parliamentary elections.
The EC is planning to set up voting screens, with the print of the commission’s emblem, that will cover three-sides of the polling booths, EC officials told the Dhaka Tribune.
They added that the EC would implement the initiative during the upcoming 10th parliamentary polls.
Strengthening Election Management in Bangladesh (SEMB), a wing of the EC, has already prepared a proposal and sent it to the commission. SEMB will realise the plan, after the proposal is approved at a future meeting of the commission, the officials informed.
A senior EC official, seeking anonymity, said the previous nine parliamentary polls saw people casting ballots in spaces – where other people present nearby could easily see the ballot paper when it was sealed.
The height and width of the proposed voting screen will be 24 inches on each side, he added.
According to the SEMB proposal, the EC needs 250,000 voting screens for around 44,000 polling centres for the upcoming general elections.
The previous parliamentary polls saw 35,217 polling centres and 177,277 polling booths being used for casting ballots. The EC would need to increase the number of polling centres to 44,000 – to meet the number of increased voters in the latest voter list update.
EC sources said the commission will publish the draft list of polling centres within September 23, and send it to field level officials across the country.
