Taxes return

Update : 05 Sep 2013, 05:12 PM

Tax time is upon us.

The amount of income tax that the Bangladesh government receives is less than 3% of GDP. Compared to other countries of the world, this is far too low and this figure could rise considerably if the citizens were to properly pay their taxes.

While it is easy to ask the citizens to pay their taxes in time and at the right rate, we must acknowledge that the bureaucratic sloth that accompanies paying these taxes is one of the basic reasons for not paying taxes. Filing tax returns is a lengthy, cumbersome, and complex process that often requires bribing.

In addition, announcing oneself to the tax authorities often opens the door to harassment and solicitation, and leaves one vulnerable to all kinds of government misconduct, even if one has done nothing wrong and is trying to do the right thing. Small wonder that so many people are fearful of paying tax.

When a taxpayer files his return, it should be a smooth procedure where he or she is provided all assistance required. Mistakes will be common in such a complex process. Instead of exploiting them, the authorities should help rectify and streamline the experience.

The online payment and return filing system is a good move in this regard, but it should be extended, within the earliest possible time and to all banks instead of Sonali Bank only.

Moreover, we should contemplate bringing every adult in this country under the tax bracket, for however insignificant an amount. Paying taxes will inspire better citizenship from people. In the process, people will demand more from the government. This will bring holistic improvement in the running of the state.
