A 57-year-old schoolteacher was arrested over charges of sexually assaulting a minor student in India’s Puducherry on Monday, the Hindustan Times reported.
Harikrishnan, staff of a government school, was arrested after the girl’s parents along with locals staged a road blockade demanding action against the teacher, said the daily.
The parents were said to have approached school authorities along with the girl, however, the school administration did not respond, prompting agitated locals to take to the streets.
The teacher was placed in Puducherry prison after a local court remanded him into custody, the report said.
School authorities later said to have ordered an inquiry into the incident.
Earlier in August, a 22-year-old photojournalist was gang raped in India’s commercial capital Mumbai. In December last year, a 23-year-old medical student was gang-raped in a moving bus in Delhi.
Both incidents sparked waves of outrage in India.
