Indian smuggler held, set free later

The anti-smuggling taskforce in Meherpur upazila thursday seized 33 Indian cows and 11 buffaloes and arrested an Indian national in this connection.

Arrestee Sirajul Islam admitted to police that he was from Petubhanga village under Nakshipara thana of Nadia district, India. He also confessed of bringing the herds to the Bangladeshi frontier village.

Motahar Hossain, upazila nirbahi officer of Mujibnagar upazila in Meherpur, said he along with a police team had gone to Sonapur village and arrested Sirajul when he was preparing to go to Meherpur with his smuggled animals.

He said the superintendent of police set free the Indian national who said during interrogation that he was an inhabitant of Majhpara village under Mujibnagar upazila.
