Extremist group Ansar Ullah Bangla Team’s centre in Dhaka, the Markajul Ulum Al Islamia premises in Bosila, Mohammadpur, had become a rally point for militant leaders, detective police said.
The militant outfit whose leader and 30 other members were arrested on Monday, used the organisation Markajul Ulum as a cover for its operations. The premises contain a mosque and a madrasa.
Former ameer of Madaripur district Jamaat-e-Islami Farid Uddin, who had also been trying to assemble all the militant organisations, told this correspondent after his arrest in March that he had visited Markajul Ulum several times and held meetings with its chief Jasim Uddin.
During an exclusive conversation, Farid Uddin, who is an ophthalmologist by profession, said, “I have had several discussions with Jasim Uddin on how all the organisations working for establishing Khelafat could come under a single umbrella.”
“Like me, many other leaders also accompanied me at different times to the office of Jasim Uddin, as he is a scholar and has the acceptance of the leaders of many organisations working for Islam,” he said.
Farid Uddin and 11 others, including Afgan War veteran Moulana Farid Uddin Masud and four Pakistani nationals, were arrested by detective police in March.
They arrested both Dr Farid and Farid Uddin Masud for allegedly planning subversive acts.
Dr Farid was a Shibir leader during his student life at Sylhet Medical College and later served for a decade as the chief of Jamaat’s Madaripur district unit.
He claims to have later left Jamaat and taken an attempt to revive Harkat-ul-Jihad Al Islami (HuJi) by bringing Harkat-ul-Mujahedin and Allah’r Dal to a single platform.
He joined hands with Moulana Farid Uddin Masud, who worked for HuJi in Pakistan after the Afgan war, for the same purpose.
