Man sets wife on fire for dowry money

Update : 06 Aug 2013, 06:27 AM

A recently married wife is fighting for her life in Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital after being set on fire by her dowry-loving husband.

The husband set fire to his wife after pouring kerosene on her body on Friday afternoon.

Local sources said Eli Begum, 20, daughter of Abdul Haque of Ali Nagar village, Biyanibazar upazila, Sylhet, got married to Nasir Uddin of Raykhail Mazhpara village, South Shurma upazila, Sylhet, in February.

Soon after the marriage, the unemployed husband began putting pressure on his wife for dowry.

In response to the situation, Eli's father tried his best to support his son-in-law.

However, the husband continued asking for more money.

Eli's family used to send Iftar items to pacify Nasir but nothing could deter him from demanding dowry.

Unsatisfied and angry, Nasir used to fly into a rage and began to torture Eli.

At 3pm on Friday, the ruthless husband threw kerosene on Eli and set fire to her, leaving her with severe burns.

The husband also threw away a jug full of water so that no-one could douse the flames.

Neighbours came to Eli's rescue after hearing her screams, but not before her entire body was burned.

The victim was taken to Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital with serious burn injuries.

She is now fighting for life in ward 6 of the hospital. She may succumb to her injuries at anytime.

Eli's mother Roshna Begum filed a case against Nasir Uddin with Mogohlbazar thana.
