Shirina Akhter Kislu emerged victorious in the Fakirhat upazila sadar union parisad by-election sunday. She got 7,003 votes in the polls whereas her closest contender, Harun-ar-Rashid, got 4,414 votes. A total of six candidates competed for the position.
Sources said, voting started at 8am amid tight security and ended at 4pm. Law enforcement officials reported no disruption.
Shukur Ali, deputy commissioner of Bagerhat, said the chairperson post was vacated by the late Fakirhat UP chairman, Khan Zahid Hasan, who was assassinated on May 18.
Zahid, also the general secretary of Fakirhat upazila Awami League, was murdered at the Rupsha upazila in Khulna.
