Why no elections to split DCCs: HC

Update : 01 Aug 2013, 04:50 AM

The High Court (HC) on July 31 issued a rule to know why the authorities concerned should not be directed to conduct polls immediately to the two city corporations in Dhaka.

A HC bench, comprising Justice Mirza Hussain Haider and Justice Muhammad Khurshid Alam Sarkar, gave the order after hearing two writ petitions seeking elections to Dhaka's North and South city corporations.

The court also sought reply form relevant authorities within four weeks.

The respondents include the local government secretary, the finance secretary, the election commission secretary, the chief election commissioner and its three commissioners.

Lawyers Alamgir Hossain and Mostafa Ahmed filed the petition for Dhaka North and South respectively.

On November 3, 2011, the government divided the Dhaka City Corporation into two parts to ease administrative work, as well as to improve services.

The city elections were scheduled to be held within May last year, but were postponed following a HC order.

In May this year, the court gave the signal for holding the polls.
