Blogger Asif Mohiuddin sent to jail

A Dhaka court on Monday afternoon sent blogger Asif Mohiuddin to jail, rejecting his plea for permanent bail.

Asif appeared before the court earlier in the day and sought permanent bail as his one-month bail period ended on July 27.

On June 27, another Dhaka court granted Asif bail for one month.

He was detained on April 3 this year for allegedly violating information, communication and technology laws.

Asif’s counsel then sought for his bail citing his health issues.

Rejecting the permanent bail petition on Monday, Md Akteruzzaman, acting metropolitan session judge, said Asif was supposed to appear before the court on July 27, instead he appeared two days later.

The defence could not produce any documents regarding his treatment and the current status of his health.

Asif was arrested in connection with a non-First Information Report (FIR) case were filed under Section 57(2) of the Information Communication Technology Act 2006.

The section of the act says: “(1) If any person deliberately publishes or transmits or causes to be published or transmitted in the website or in electronic form any material which is fake and obscene or its effect is such as to tend to deprave and corrupt persons who are likely, having regard to all relevant circumstances, to read, see or hear the matter contained or embodied in it, or causes to deteriorate or creates possibility to deteriorate law and order, prejudice the image of the State or person or causes to hurt or may hurt religious belief or instigate against any person or organisation, then this activity of his will be regarded as an offence.

“(2) Whoever commits offence under sub-section (1) of this section he shall be punishable with imprisonment for a term which may extend to ten years and with fine of Tk one crore.”

Similar case was filed against three other bloggers - Mashiur Rahman Biplob, Russel Pervez and Subrata Adhikari Shuvo - under the same act.

Biplob was granted bail on June 2 this year while bloggers Shuvo and Parvez were granted bail on May 12.

The four bloggers were arrested early April from different parts of the capital for allegedly making “derogatory contents about Islam and Prophet Muhammad (SM)” on the internet.
