Shibir calls off Sunday’s hartal

Update : 29 Jun 2013, 02:24 PM

Chhatra Shibir, the student wing of Jamaat, has called off its Sunday’s hartal considering inclement weather and some scheduled examinations.

Acting publicity secretary of Shibir Mizanur Rahman confirmed the matter.

Earlier on Friday, Shibir threatened to announce a countrywide hartal on Sunday if its demands, which include the release of its central president, were not met.

Abdul Zabbar, secretary general of the organisation, issued the statement.

Zabbar said they would declare the shutdown if their demands including “stopping repression on leaders and activists, the unconditional release of Shibir President Delwar Hossain, and not placing arrested leaders and activists before courts” were not met.

Shibir leader Zabbar also said they would stage demonstrations at different places across the country Saturday to press home their demands.

Police arrested Shibir President Delwar from his sister’s house in the city’s Shyamoli on March 31. He was placed on a 14-day remand on April 1 for his alleged involvement in an explosion of crude hand-bombs on Mirpur Road in the capital on February 28.
