Complaint lodged at ICC accusing Hasina, 24 others

A complaint has been lodged against Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and 24 other government high-ups in the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague, Netherlands for allegedly violating human rights.

A Washington-based law firm Martin F. McMahon & Associates on behalf of two US-based organisations named Human Rights and Development for Bangladesh and Bangladeshi-Americans in Greater Washington DC has lodge the case in ICC on Thursday, according to a report by BBC Bangla radio.

The case implicated influential officials of the incumbent Bangladesh government for their alleged role in violating human rights and petitioned the ICC to investigate and prosecute those responsible.

However, Ahmed Ziauddin, a legal expert currently based in Brussels, told BBC Bangla that he does not believe such magnitudes of incidents of crimes against humanity and violation of human rights had taken place in Bangladesh in recent times which might requires ICC’s attention.

“I am not sure about the objective of it and I am sure those Washington-based organisations have some political motives. They may have been trying to create political hype since filing a complaint in the ICC does not mean proceedings of a case will start immediately,” Ziauddin told BBC Bangla.

The allegations, filed with the ICC by Martin F. McMahon & Associates, include “torture, forced disappearance, extrajudicial executions and mass killings.”

Incidents like cases against daily Amar Desh acting Editor Mahmudur Rahman, alleged abduction of Shukhoranjan Bali, a defence witness for Delwar Hossain Sayedee in a case at International Crimes Tribunal (ICT), and killing of Aminul Islam, a labour rights leader, May 5 incidents of Hefazat-e-Islam were also mentioned in the petition, according to website, rtnn.net.

Home minister, information minister, state minister for home, state minister for law, a joint secretary general of Awami League, inspector general of police and director generals of Rapid Action Battalion and Border Guard Bangladesh are among the accused.
