State Minister for Primary and Mass Education Motahar Hossain was confined on Thursday in the district auditorium-cum-community centre by Awami League men, concerning the formation of a new sadar upazila committee.
Motahar, also president of the district Awami League, was incarcerated for 15 minutes.
The incident caused the proposed view exchange meeting, between the minister and the party men in the upazila, to be put off.
Later, the minister left the meeting venue being escorted by additional policemen.
The agitated party activists held a two-hour blockade on the Lalmonirhat-Rangpur road in Mostofi and Teesta areas, and the Lalmonirhat-Burimari highway at mission crossing in the town demanding the formation of the upazila unit Awami League committee, as per the suggestions of the party’s Joint Secretary Mahbub-Ul-Alam Hanif.
The party activists said Hanif issued a letter on June 9 to the district leaders, asking them to form the sadar upazila unit committee with Golam Mostafa Swapon as the committee’s president and Zahurul Haque Mamun as general secretary.
But the state minister’s decision to form an entirely new committee angered the party activists who flew into a rage and resorted to protest.
Awami League men at grass roots levels alleged that the state minister wanted to select his chosen candidates for the committee and that is why he fought shy of Hanif’s suggestions.
