An alleged criminal was killed in a shootout with members of Detective Branch of Police in the city’s Matsya Bhaban area of Ramna, early on Sunday.
The deceased whose identity could not be confirmed immediately had been involved in hijacking in Hatirjheel and Ramna areas for the last several days, detectives claim.
A DB team was on a special drive to nab drug traders in the city when they received information that hijackers in a white private car were roaming around Hatirjheel and Ramna areas, and robbing commuters of their valuables.
Police formed a barricade with two microbuses on the road in front of Ramna Park to stop the gang in the private car, as it was moving suspiciously in the area at around 1:45am, said Senior Assistant Commissioner Asaduzzaman of DB.
As the detectives chased the car, the gangsters fired gunshots targeting the law enforcers near Matsya Bhaban.
“At one stage, 2-3 gangsters fled the scene leaving behind the car. We found one of the criminals lying inside the car in a pool of blood,” he said.
The injured criminal was rushed to the Dhaka Medical College hospital where the on-duty doctor declared him dead. A pistol and a sharp weapon were recovered from inside the car.
Morgue sources said the victim sustained wounds shot from close range in the chest. No one had come to the morgue to claim the body.
