An alleged criminal was killed in a shootout with members of Detective Branch of police in the city’s Matsya Bhaban area early Sunday.
The deceased was identified as Raju, 35, who was involved in vehicles hijacking, dacoity and other criminal activities in the capital and elsewhere in the country.
Raju along with his accomplices had been involved in hijacking in Hatirjheel, Dhanmondi, Ramna and Banani areas for the last several days.
A team of DB police led by Senior Assistant Commissioner Asaduzzaman challenged a private car when it was moving suspiciously in front of Dhaka club at about 1:45 am, according to UNB.
As the detectives chased the private car the gangsters fired gunshots targeting the law enforcers near Matsya Bhaban. The DB police also responded with fire, Asaduzzaman said.
“At one stage, 2-3 gangsters fled the scene leaving behind the private car. When we went near the private car, we found one of the criminals lying inside the private car in a pool of blood,” he said.
The injured criminal was rushed to the Dhaka Medical College hospital where the on-duty doctor declared him dead.
One pistol and one sharp weapon were recovered from inside the private car.
Raju was wanted in 42 cases including of robbery, dacoity and car hijacking, said the official.
