Budget of election luxury: Ershad

Update : 06 Jun 2013, 03:27 PM

Jatiya Party Chairman HM Ershad on Thursday termed the proposed budget for the fiscal year 2013-2014 a budget of election luxury saying that the government had to avoid rationale in the context of political reality, reports UNB.

“I don’t want to say it’s an ambitious budget. Even, I don’t want to term it anti-people or pro-people government. In fact, it’s a budget of election luxury,” he said in his instant reaction to the proposed budget.

Ershad further said, “If it’s implemented, then it’s well and good. But this expectation doesn’t seem to be fulfilled.”

He said the budget will have the touch of three governments -- present government, polls-time interim government and the new government after the polls – if the country move forwards maintaining democratic trend. “This budget will have to be implemented by these three governments.”

The JP chief said the budget will be a big problem for the new government.

“The budget that was supposed to be in place considering the country’s socioeconomic reality avoided that rationale in the context of political reality. So, the budget has been formulated as a pro-election fashion,” Ershad said.

Given the historical trend, the former President said, each government, at the fag-end of its tenure, mentions some visible scopes and facilities in an attempt to woo the voters. “There’s no exception in this budget, too.”

“That’s why, the biggest-ever budget has been placed in parliament for the next fiscal year. It’ll be very difficult to implement the budget,” he said.

Ershad also said the budget lacks the elements of ‘economic and cost-effective’ that were essential.
