Bikalpadhara to go with BNP

Update : 05 Jun 2013, 05:25 AM

Bikalpadhara Bangladesh, along with other opposition parties will form a separate alliance with the BNP to wage a strong movement for the restoration of caretaker government system, reported UNB.

“The new alliance will be a platform to launch a movement and contest the next general elections. The framework of the fresh alliance will be finalised soon,” said party spokesperson and joint secretary general Mahi B Chowdhury during a press conference at the National Press Club on Tuesday.

“We do not want to lose our existence by merging with the BNP or joining the 18-party alliance. Together with some opposition parties we will forge a separate alliance with the BNP. We have already had positive response from them [BNP] in this regard,” he said.

AQM Badruddoza Chowdhury, the founding secretary general of the BNP, started Bikalpadhara in 2004 with other ex BNP leaders in 2002 when he was forced to step down as the president.

Mahi said the country was at a very critical point under an “autocrat and monster” government.  He said under the circumstances, a united front, as strong as steel was needed between the main opposition and allied political parties “for the sake of the country’s independence, sovereignty and democracy and ensuring people’s voting rights.”

He said Bikalpadhara was Awami League’s ally in 2008 but did not join the 14-party alliance this time. Bikalpadhara had a “psychological link” with the BNP said Mahi. Party sources said Bikalpadhara would not join the 18-party alliance because many have reservations about the Jamaat-e-Islami.
