JS budget session begins

The 18th session of the 9th Jatiya Sangsad (JS) and the budget session of 2013 began Monday afternoon through the speech of Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury.

President M Abdul Hamid has summoned the session as per Article 72 of the constitution.

In this session, Finance Minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith will place the national budget for 2013-14 on June 6.

This is the fifth and the last budget of the Awami League-led grand alliance government.

This government will not be able to implement the budget fully as its tenure expires at the middle of the next fiscal year.

The upcoming fiscal year’s budget is likely to be 13-14 percent higher than the current fiscal year.

Besides the national budget, the parliament is likely to pass a number of important bills in this session.

The parliament secretariat has taken all preparations for the budget session. Officials said a meeting of the business advisory committee will be held Monday to finalise the duration of the 18th session.

The Speaker has also urged the opposition MPs to join the parliament and raise their demands there.

Besides, there is a constitutional obligation for the opposition MPs to join parliament session to retain their membership, as their absence from the House is only seven days away from the authorized 90-day quota.

The 17th session of parliament began on April 21 and ended on April 30.

In eight working days of the session, seven bills were passed out of 20 placed.
