8 injured during hartal in Chapainawabganj

At least eight people, including three policemen, were injured in a clash between activists of Islami Chhatra Shibir and police and BGB members during a half-day hartal called by the BNP-led 18-party alliance in Chapainawabganj on Sunday, reported UNB. Sources said a group of Shibir activists brought out a procession in Shibtala area of the town at about 6.00am. When the Shibir activists along with the procession reached PTI Road, police and BGB members obstructed them. The Shibir activists blasted 13 crude bombs at that time and hurled brick chips, injuring three law enforcers. Later, the law enforcers fired several rounds of rubber bullet and lobbed teargas canisters, leaving five Shibir men injured. A chase and counter chase took place during the melee. Police detained three people from the spot. Bashir Ahmed, superintendent of police of Chapainawabganj, said police fired 55 rounds of rubber bullet to bring the situation under control. The 18-party enforced the shutdown in the district protesting the arrest of Shibganj upazila parishad chairman and district unit Jamaat nayeb-e-ameer Keramat Ali. A police team arrested Keramat Ali from his house in Shibganj upazila on Saturday afternoon.
